Best EVER Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge
There is simply no pretending that there is any bit of this recipe for Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge that is redeemable in terms of nutritional value. Okay, we can argue about how healthy peanuts can be for you, and even chat about the antioxidant wonders of 70 percent chocolate. But seriously? The reality is that fudge is one of the last in a long line of wonderful waist line killers that needs to be eaten just because we love it. Period. That is it. No discussion. So just go and put on your stretchy pants. You know, the ones with that fantastic worn elastic band that are so comfy, and then sit yourself down to an entire plate of this sweet stuff and gorge until you are satisfied. Yum. Save a piece or two for someone else if you can. Otherwise, what the heck, you made it; you enjoy it. Sometimes we just have to do these things for ourselves, girls. Does that sound awful?
In my family, as I grew up, we had a few different times in the year when all bets were off regarding food, and we were allowed to eat as much as we wanted of the treat we had chosen. Ice cream day was one of those days in the year. On that day, our family would buy and eat as much ice cream and as many ice cream toppings as we wanted, and eat them until we could not possibly eat one more bite. My family still does it today. It is a very special day in our household, and I rarely eat ice cream at any other time of the year. And then the entire day is one of anticipation, from the first rise in the morning when we plan the ice cream outing, what varieties we will get, and what toppings we will buy, and whether we will start with something new or stick to our old favorites. Then we arrive home, and some of us warm the ice cream up to the melting point before we dig in, while others eat theirs rock hard and icy cold. And so it goes for the entire day until we are entirely and completely sick of all things ice cream and candy. Then we start planning for next year.
There is a wonderful psychological effect of being able to eat something entirely decadent and not worry a bit about whether or not the stuff is good for you. The whole experience of unbridled indulgence is really great. My mother also did this with blueberry pie. She made pies from berries we would all help her gather in the great northern Canadian shield on Lake Temagami where we would summer. We would eat blueberry pie until our finger tips were turning color and our mouths and teeth were entirely stained. Sometimes it is just good for our hearts to have an entire indulgence in some thing, regardless of the calories, fats, sugars or what ever other fear mongering is lecturing us in our heads.
Fudge, it seems to me, is just one of those wonderful things. Eat it rarely. But when you do, have a fabulous recipe to make a from-the-heart treat. And why not this one? It is rich and sweet and made with tons of butter and sugar. It blends peanut butter and chocolate, so kids will love it. Choose a date, and make it for your family. Then indulge yourself, and them.
