We spend so much of our day cleaning and washing and ensuring that our homes are spit spot, but one of the things we often don’t consider is how to clean and freshen your mattress. It is important to do so, though, because our mattress gets dirty just like everything else in the house.

Bed bugs and mites can and do come to live in all of our things. So our furniture, pillows, and beds get loaded with the little critters. Dust mites are not the same thing as bed bugs, although you can find either between your sheets. Dust mites are actually a spider, but so tiny you are not very likely to ever see them. They like to live in damp and moist places where they can feast on dead skin cells that we have shed. They can cause allergic reactions in some people including asthma and eczema, among other things.

Bed bugs can grow to become about the size of an apple seed, so you can see the adults, at least, with your naked eye. They are brownish red in color and live around the bed and in it. So you have to check your baseboards and curtains to see if there are any in your area. They can be tough to get rid of, and they do bite. There are no real health concerns, but the itch can make you a bit crazy, and who wants bugs in their bed?

You can keep these issues to a minimum by following a few cleaning guidelines that you can find at this website. The first rule is to remove all the linen and blankets from the bed and give them a good wash in the hottest and soapiest water your washer can handle. Even if the blankets cannot go in the wash, you can often put them in to the dryer with hot air and that should go a long way to handling the issue.
